Green Oceans Statement on the Administration’s Cancellation of Offshore Wind Turbines and TotalEnergies Settlement

“This week’s announcement that the Department of the Interior has reached an agreement with TotalEnergies to end its offshore wind leases is a meaningful and necessary step — and Green Oceans applauds the Trump Administration for taking it”, said Barbara Chapman, trustee and spokesperson for Green Oceans.

This decision reflects exactly what Americans have been saying for years: offshore wind is not affordable, it is not reliable, and it is not in our national interest. During Winter Storm Fern, energy produced from wind turbines across the six New England states plummeted to 2% - less than the amount of energy produced by the burning of wood and trash.  That is not an energy strategy. That is a taxpayer-funded failure dressed up as progress.

We commend Secretary Burgum, Secretary Wright, President Trump and his team for prioritizing hardworking ratepayers over an ideological energy agenda that was never honest about its true costs. We in New England are aware of the hidden mandates, inflated power purchase agreements, and long-term contracts baked into our utility bills that are driving up energy costs. Offshore wind is the most expensive form of electricity generation, and its costs are passed directly to ratepayers. These hidden costs quietly drain American family budgets. This settlement begins to address what’s wrong with OSW production.
